William J. Sampson, CP
William J. Sampson, a native of the Capital District, is the president of Sampson's Prosthetic & Orthotic Laboratory. An ABC-certified prosthetist since 1989, Bill graduated from Hudson Valley Community College and received his bachelor of science degree in prosthetics and orthotics from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas. His orthotic and prosthetic internships were served at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and the University of Texas Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinic. Bill has completed numerous continuing education courses keeping, abreast of the most recent advancements in prosthetics, computer-aided design and manufacturing technology. In 1999, Bill was one of only two East Coast prosthetists to be certified in fitting the computer-controlled C-Leg®. He is now among an elite group of practitioners certified to fit the technologically-advanced DynamicArm®. He is also certified to teach and fabricate the prosthetic socket technique MAS (Marlo Anatomical Socket) Design.
In response to patients' post-surgical needs, Bill co-founded the Capital District A.S.P.I.R.E. Inc. chapter, the sports program involving recreation and exercise for the physically challenged, and its Amputees on Call Support Group, which helps patients with their adjustment and progress toward recovery. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y., he implemented an internship program for mechanical and biomedical engineering majors where they participate in the design and development of specific components. This program has made valuable contributions to prosthetic technology, enhancing the return of several patients to pre-amputation activities.
Bill is a member of the American Board for Certification, and both the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists and the New York State American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists.
